Sport in Qatar

According to Mahfoud Amara (2005, 503), sport has become a “vehicle par excellence for the promotion of a new Qatar under the leadership of [Sheikh] Hamad Khalifa”. Tracing the internationalisation of the sector since 1995, two significant formative moments stand out in particular. The first occurs in the first half of the 2000s and includes the founding of the elite sports academy Aspire, and the bidding and hosting of the 2006 Asian Games, Qatar’s first international sports event. The second occurs at the beginning of the 2010s, when Qatar was awarded the hosting rights for the 2022 FIFA Football World Cup, state-affiliated bodies started investing into European football clubs, and the Emir institutionalised the National Sports Day as an official state-holiday. Below, I particularly focus on the development of Aspire and the road to 2022 as key moments in the production of Qatar’s emerging sports-state brand.
